I suppose one of the reasons we sometimes think and write about Willie as if he was human is that he does so many things which seem like human reactions. This morning he let out him frustrations toward a male Song Sparrow. Yesterday he fought the wind most of the day with a little respite in the late afternoon when he fed until 5:45 p.m. Today he reappeared at 5:45 and made 4 visits in the first 7 minutes in the cold, still, morning air. Then that Song Sparrow flew into the top of Willie's bare bush to the left of the feeder, as he has done for several mornings now, and began his beautiful "is there a female Song Sparrow who wants to meet me and have a family together" rendition. Well, that must have pushed Willie over the edge and he exploded out of his cedar bush and went after that sparrow and chased him out of the bare bush and across the road into the neighbor's yard. A few minutes later he returned to the feeder to sit tranquilly as if to say, "now this is going to be a good day". Maybe we'll have to change our usual way of describing Willie from "what a beautiful bird" to "what a bully bird".
