Today (4/3) I saw my first Ruby-throated hummingbird of the season, in our yard in Lynchburg. It was visiting the Coral Honeysuckle vines on the fence around our yard. Funny, I was just thinking, "I wonder when the hummingbirds will get here," and then there it was. Bird activity has been really high here in the last couple of weeks. Last week (week of March 23), my list included Purple Finch (the most I saw was 6, 3 males, 3 females) House Finch Am. Crow Turkey Vulture Canada Goose Eurasian Collared-Dove (it looks like they're setting up shop in our neighbor's tree, where they nested last year) Rock Pigeon (a new one to my yard...) Mourning Dove Yellow-bellied Sapsucker Downy Woodpecker Red-bellied Woodpecker Chipping Sparrow Dark-eyed Junco Northern Cardinal Eastern Towhee Eastern Bluebird American Robin White-throated Sparrow Song Sparrow White-breasted Nuthatch Northern Mockingbird Brown Thrasher (first-of-season 3/27) Purple Martin Carolina Wren Carolina Chickadee Tufted Titmouse European Starling House Sparrow Am. Goldfinch Common Grackle Red-winged Blackbird Brown-headed Cowbird Cooper's Hawk The activity seems to have died down a lot this week. Then again, I was on spring break last week and had more time to pay attention to what was going on outside, so maybe they're still quite busy, and I just haven't noticed. Good birding to all!
