Hi, Tanya. I'm adding another of those posts about having Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. My husband and i have been thrilled to see them since Wed 4/25 - as many as 5 males at once and 1 female. This is our 3rd spring at our house here in suburban southeast Davidson County, and it's the first Rose-breasteds we've seen. Yay! Our experience with them for 15 years or so in upstate New York is that they prefer a tray to stand on and feed on black oil sunflowers. Since the racoons made off with your trays, i'd suggest putting up hanging tray feeders and attaching trays to the bottom of other types of hanging feeders. (We would see them on perches of feeders, but they always chose the tray if there was room.) Hope that answers your question a little bit, and oh, BTW we put our feeders fairly close to the house. What i'm really hoping for next is a visit from a Blue Grosbeak. I've NEVER seen one of those! I have recently moved and my feeders have only been up about a month. I have hanging feeders, but I do not have any tray or ground feeders (raccoons ran off with them). Anyone have suggestions on how I might be able to attract them? I have a heavily wooded area that adjoins a large open field. I currently have all my feeders on the edge of the treeline. I have an excellent variety and abundance of birds, just no Grosbeaks. > > On a side note, I have Goldfinches, Cardinals, and Indigo Buntings that "hang together" and it is so beautiful to see those colors amongst each other like that!
