Beaman Park Nashville-Davidson Co. TN 22 May 2010 Five birders joined a walk sponsored by Beaman Park Nature Center this morning. We began at the Nature Center on Old Hickory Blvd and walked down the Sedge Hill Trail to Henry Hollow Creek, then took the Henry Hollow Trail up to Ridgetop Trail, back down along the road to the lower parking lot following the Henry Hollow Creek to rejoin the Sedge Hill Trail, finally returning to the Nature Center. Tanagers were in large numbers; we saw SUMMER TANAGERS and SCARLET TANAGERS of both sexes, often in pairs. We also heard four WOOD THRUSH loud and clear. This species has been a bit illusive for many of us this spring---not the case this morning. We not only heard, but also saw a good number of RED-EYED VIREOS. YELLOW-THROATED VIREOS remained unseen but certainly heard. At one point along the Henry Hollow Creek, we spied a fledgling on the forest floor. It looked thrush-like, but because it remained motionless in the obscurity, it was hard to identify. Was it a Wood Thrush? Was it a Louisiana Waterthrush? Suddenly an adult OVENBIRD walked out toward the young one. But we did not see it feed or in any way attend to the fledgling. So while we might like to think this was an adult with its young, we remain unsure. On the walk we got a pretty good lesson in the difference between the songs of the OVENBIRD and that of the KENTUCKY WARBLER, although we heard only one example of the latter. While we did not get a high species count, we felt we got pretty good looks and sounds of the birds we did observe.
