9 October 2019
Radnor Lake
7:00am to 10:30am
Walk from the West parking lot to Bench 20 and Long Bridge
and return.

For the final NTOS Wednesday fall bird walk at Radnor Lake
State Natural Area a large gathering of 30 birders appeared.
They were greeted by clear skies and initial temperatures
in the 50s, lovely conditions compared to the previous
walks conducted in the 90s.  In the parking lot some birders
were treated to views of a YELLOW BELLIED SAPSUCKER and
BLACK-THROATED GREEN and BAY-BREASTED WARBLERs. At the
intersection of Otter Creek Road and the dirt road to
the dam additional BAY-BREASTED WARBLERs and a BLACKBURNIAN
WARBLER were found. Viewing near the dam was made a bit
difficult with the extensive number of CEDAR WAXWINGs
fluttering around and a large group of CHIMNEY SWIFTs on the
wing. Nevertheless, the group found significant warbler and
vireo activity around that location. The highlight of the
walk through the woods from the dam to Long Bridge was an
OVENBIRD that briefly cooperated for many of us. The
report of a male HOODED WARBLER seen at Long Bridge earlier
in the morning by one of our scouting team led the group to
extensively search the area. Perhaps 5 minutes after a
significant part of our group gave up the search and began
to retrace their steps to the west parking lot, the warbler
was found and put on a great show for us with several
photographers getting nice shots. The good weather plus
11 warbler species and 4 different vireos was a great way
to finish the NTOS Wednesday fall walks.
