Oct. 17, 2002 Black Bayou WMA Champy's Pocket-Reelfoot Lake Lake Co. TN A late afternoon run to Reelfoot to gander at the rails produced 31 Sora and the normal cast of extras but the machines were too far away most of the time and the area was very dry. Most of the 31 Soras were counted in a 15 minute period of the two hour watch at the only time the combine wheels glistened with moisture. They will complete most of the harvest today and if not the rain will preclude harvesting tomorrow. On the way home I went to the area around Miston and all the rice has been harvested there. Still looking for that Virginia that has eluded me all year..... At Black Bayou, huge flocks of Goldfinches were using the fields and one is near perfect for Sharp-tailed Sparrows and one was seen nearby with a couple of Swamp Sparrows had little time to search. I got my first Common Loon for the season at Champy's Pocket and the gull population is up with lots of Ring-billed and a couple of Herring. DC Cormorants are everywhere but no luck on anything different. Ruddy Ducks are rafted up with a sprinkling of Ring-necked and Pied-billed Grebes. An adult Bald Eagle perched out on a stump was magnificent in the afternoon sun. The Mississippi River is on another roller coaster ride and most sandbars are under water, leaving little habitat for the normal late and early migrators. Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
