I finally was able to observe the Red Crossbills in Erwin, TN at Dave Catonâ??s feeders. Third timeâ??s the charm. We were calling the yellow and red crossbills, which looked very cool, â??immature malesâ?? (see photos at link). However, according the Petersen Guide to Molt in NA Birds by Steve Howell, they could either be immature or adult (I assume 2nd year birds) where the adult feathers grew in but the pigment had not turned to red for all of them yet. I think that may also be the case with those crazy looking â??immatureâ?? summer tanagers(?). Thanks to Dave for hosting the birds and us.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/dkirschke/  David Kirschke Johnson City, TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
