Amber and I made it out to Rankin WMA on Douglas Lake in Cocke Co., TN on Monday afternoon (6 Sept 2004). There were 12 other birders out there as well and hopefully some of them will report as well on what else might have been found, particularly by canoe. 12 species of shorebirds (plus two others that we personally missed) including Baird's, Stilt and Buff-breasted Sandpipers and a Sanderling reported by Frank Bills seen from the entrance at the railroad tracks. A Snowy Egret flyover. No Bald Eagles while we were there. Did enjoy watching three Caspian Terns feeding at close range. We left around 7:30 to head for dinner at Dandridge Seafood only to find it closed on Mondays. :-( More birds were coming to roost and the first clouds and sprinkles from Frances were rotating in... saw a couple nice rainbows and nice sunset. Lake levels are still high at just over 985 ft so birding from the road involves looking at birds over a mile away. Still, lots of goodies could be picked out of the 300+ shorebirds we had (about 200 of those Killdeer). A good non-bird find for me was a life butterfly, a male Diana Fritillary. Unfortunately, it spooked before I got a photo. This would be on the later end of flight dates for this species.
