Every year we let pokeberries grow on the hill in front of our home and also
have allowed two of them to become part of the 'landscaping' along with some
other native plants/weeds. One of them that we've allowed to stay has reached
a height of 15' tall with a spread to match that.
Yesterday afternoon, I watched as 3 Summer Tanagers came in to feed on the
ripening berries. They would take one berry at a time, squeeze it to release
the juice, then when the berry was smushed up, they would gobble it down.
Seems like it would be a refreshing summertime treat with a little bit of a
sugar kick.
