We are gearing up for this year's Partners in Flight Point Counts at more than 40 locations across Tennessee. Point counts began in the state in 1993 on a handful of sites across the state and have been conducted in every year since. A few dozen TOS members participated by laying out routes and conducting point counts on Wildlife Management Areas, State Parks, State Forests, and other managed lands. That effort grew to a peak of more than 2,000 points on 40 areas being monitored across the state in 1999. We now have more than 125,000 individual Tennessee bird records from these counts that have been entered in the USGS Patuxent Point Count database. The information contained in the point count database has been utilized by a variety of agencies and organizations: to make bird conservation based land management decisions at the local level, to justify funding requests from granting entities, to examine research needs and possibilities on public lands, to fuel long term plans for ecosystem management, to looking a relative densities of birds, and to answer a number of other questions about what birds are where and using what habitats during the breeding season. Now these data are being used to estimate actual numbers of birds across wide areas! It is certainly a lot of work to gather all of this data. And we are very grateful for all of the thousands of hours that volunteers have provided to this effort. If you are interested in participating in point counts this year, or have questions about the counts, please contact me. The 2004 data forms are available upon request. I plan to make these (along with reports of past work) available on the web in the near future and will announce that availability as soon as it happens.
