On the way to work this morning driving on I-65 approaching Rosa Parks Blvd. just after crossing the river, I noticed a large bird flying like a pigeon or nighthawk, with the fully upright stroke of the wings, yet somewhat in slow motion. As I got closer, it was obviously a large hawk. I continued to watch it as it flew up the side of the interstate, crossed in front of me, then landed in a tree on the other side of the interstate. My thought is Coopers Hawk due to large size, color, and shape (long tail/accipiter), but I have never seen one give that wing stroke. I am used to seeing the flutter stroke and glide, not the deep, slower wing beat this one had. By the time I turned around at 28th Ave. and exited to scour the area where I saw it land, there was no sign of it for binocular viewing. Is this flight pattern typical of any certain hawk, maybe just something I have missed, or is it typical of another, less common hawk?
