2 Mar 2009 Montgomery County, TN Fort Campbell Last night I conducted a limited broadcast survey on Fort Campbell to see if any Northern saw-whet owls would be detected. Two saw-whets were heard vocalizing the advertising call (toot call) at stops 2 & 4 (out of a 20 stop route spaced 1 mile apart) in response to a playback tape. The owls were heard at 9:58 and 10:39pm, respectively. Weather conditions were ideal with clear skies, very light winds, and temps ranging from 19-25 degrees F. Although this is a small sample size it's interesting to note that this is a similar saw-whet detection rate that Steve Stedman saw in his Big South Fork survey in 2000. It appears to be a good year for saw-whets in the southeast based upon the Sargent's successful banding of 14 saw-whets in Alabama and other reports. Thanks Michael Bierly for keeping me posted on their results -that convinced me this was the year to try. Hopefully I can run some more routes if time and weather permit.
