Yesterday I observed a pair of Northern flickers visiting the shelf that is positioned under and sheltered by the gazebo roof. They visited more than once during the day. The gazebo is on stilts because it sits at deck level. In September of last breeding season I observed a flicker roosting under the overhang at night on several occasions. I thought it to be a young bird. He would fly in just before dark. More than once in the past few weeks, and especially yesterday, I observed a pair of flickers visiting the gazebo and disappearing under the overhang, as though investigating. Last spring a pair of phoebes nested under the overhang twice during the season. This morning I glanced out and observed both a pair of phoebes and a pair of flickers fluttering under the overhang as though in competition for its space. When I stepped outside to get a better look, they had already dispursed, but I spotted one of the flickers perched silently on a limb close by. They clearly have a strong interest in the gazebo. You can see images and a report on the flicker activity in my blog post: _http://vickiehenderson.blogspot.com/2011/01/magic-gazebo-and-pair-of-northe rn.html_ (http://vickiehenderson.blogspot.com/2011/01/magic-gazebo-and-pair-of-northern.html) I would be happy to learn of any experiences about flicker roosting activity and/or the use of human structures for nesting. Also wondered if anyone on the list subscribes to Birds of North America online and would like to know more about how you've found it helpful.
