Dec. 4 We (the Sewanee Natural History Society) went to the crane spot in Winchester today (directions in an earlier post) and found 2 WHOOPING CRANES and 2 SANDHILLS. On hwy 64 in between Winchester and I-24 near the turn to Alto, we spotted a large group (~200) of SANDHILLS on the south side of the road in a corn field. We then went to Nickajack to look for the scoters. We checked the dam and the boat launches at the small campground US 41 (not Shellmound). We found lots of AM. COOTS, PIED BILLED GREBES, and some ducks, most notably, 5 CANVASBACKS but no scoters or mergansers. We did not check the Shellmound area though. On a different note my father saw the ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK again today on hwy 64 about 5 miles west of Belvidere. It was still on the power lines in the road construction area. In contrast to Friday, he saw no Red-tailed Hawks today. Maybe they were in the trees trying to stay warm while the Rough-legged was happy in the cold! -Bert Harris Sewanee =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation.
