July 24, 2012 Henry County TN At about 9:30 this morning, we were sitting on our back porch birding. Our back yard is surrounded by woods and there is only a small area of sky visible. My husband spotted a fast-gliding bird come wheeling quickly across this patch of sky. I managed to get binoculars on it and saw it was a Mississppi Kite before it disappeared from view. We quickly ran through the house, out the front door and around to get a view of that area, which is over fields with patches of woods. The bird was in view for one good look by my husband before it wheeled away. This is the first time we have seen a Mississippi Kite from home, and we have very rarely seen them in our area (upper northwest TN, near the Kentucky Lake area).
