June 20, 2010
Shelby Co. TN

I photographed young nestlings being fed all across Shelby Co. on Sunday.
Scissor-tailed, Western Kingbirds and hybrids were found with nests being
shaded and young being fed at 18 locations.

At TVA Lake, in Ensley Bottoms and on McKellar Lake, a total of 17
Black-bellied Whistling Ducks were photographed, and I'm sure some are setting
eggs in the area. A total of 39 Least Terns were counted using the ash flows
at TVA Lake for courting and nesting with another 42 counted on one slip of
sand on the Mississippi River. The male Lesser Scaup with the crippled
right wing still hangs on at TVA while the female at the "Pits" has not been
seen for a while, probably Coyote caught.

At the "Pits", I watched a brood of Black-necked Stilts just hatching
(Cute-Cute-Cute - awhhh inspiring ) and found a nest with FIVE eggs!! I've
seen
as high as 7 eggs in a stilt nest, dumping or over active hormones? I've
see one pair that raised a brood of 6 young to flying stage.

TODAY is the Day, you can find returning shorebirds on my
calendar.............None seen yesterday.
Good Birding !!!
