Sorry to jumble all of the above subject matters together--so much to do and so little time... The nesting Blue Jays in my back yard appear to have come through the freezing temps o.k. Starting this past Tuesday, April 17, the parent birds where seen bringing food to the nest and have continued to do so. With the increase in daily temps the feeding visits have increased---maybe food is getting a bit easier to find? We finally had our first Ruby-throat of the season on Monday, April 16. Since then we have watched as up to 10 of both sexes come to feed/fight. Since the only good place for me to place a feeder at this location is about 30 feet off the ground above a second floor balcony, it seems that the feeder itself is so visible that it has acted as a beacon. No one else in the neighborhood with hummer feeders have reported as many birds at their locations. I guess its time for me to think about adding a couple of more feeders. We were visited by a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak yesterday in the backyard along with one Monarch butterfly.
