The Nashville Spring Count was held on May 8 with 142 species totaled. Some areas were not able to be covered due to the devastating flooding that occurred here last weekend. It was a very trying week for all of us, and I really appreciate the patience and help of all the participants, and know that others would liked to have helped if they could. Transient migrant numbers were down, as they have been all spring. And the flooding took its toll on nesting birds, especially Cliff Swallows and ground nesters. But there were some highlights such as a late Ring-necked Duck at Shelby Park, 4 Bald Eagles, several shorebird species thanks to flooded sod farms and the Gallatin Steam Plant, 3 Red-headed Woodpeckers, 1 Willow Flycatcher at Shelby Bottoms, 3 Scissor-tailed Flycatchers and 3 Bewick's Wrens in Rutherford Co., 121 Bank Swallows, Vesper, Henslow's and Lincoln's sparrows at Bells Bend, and 1 Lark Sparrow, 6 Grasshopper Sparrows, and 2 Dickcissels on the Percy Priest route. Both tanagers and Orchard Orioles were found in large numbers.
