After watching the Wednesday night bicycle races at LP Field this evening (20 June 12), I found the new location of the Purple Martin roost with amazingly little effort. The new site is located in a woodlot on the side of the interstate, just like the old roost. The location is S 5th St at Crutcher St, which is 1 block north of Davidson St (which is the road you take into Shelby Bottoms Park). All birds were in the roost by 8:30pm. I got there after some birds had already gone into the roost, but there were about 3000 birds present, with a lot of the birds streaming in from the southeast. Directions: From I-24 at the Shelby Ave exit, Exit 49 (same exit for LP Field), go east on Shelby Ave (away from LP Field) one block to S 5th St, which is the first light. Make a right on S 5th St and go south 2 blocks. Just before you get to Crutcher St, there's an abandoned-looking construction lot with fences, gates, No Trespassing signs, and random equipment and the birds roost in the trees against the interstate. There is opportunity for parking on the side of the road at this location, just use caution with parking safely. This site is a little better lit, but has more people and car traffic. For reference: if you go past Crutcher St, you come to a stop sign which is where you would make a left to drive to Shelby Bottoms Park.
