Friends of Warner Park's "Hill Property" Nashville-Davidson Co. TN Saturday 16 October 2010 The Nashville Chapter of TOS walked and birded this newly acquired 324 acre property that's home to an old-growth forest of trees more than two centuries old. The weather could not have been better for this outing. The rolling grass-covered hills at the base of the ridge that contains the big trees provided good light and good viewing for the 15 birders that participated in this morning's walk. One highlight included four RED-TAILED HAWKS-- one flew in and perched in a nearby tree as we were gathering, another flew through the forest near the huge red maple that may be one of the oldest in the state and two more were soaring in the clear blue sky as we headed back to the parking area. Eight TOWHEES were virtually all in two side-by side trees in the field leading up to the old-growth forest. It was hard to keep track of them as they flew back and forth, calling. An accipiter flew overhead. Consensus is that we saw a SHARPED-SHINNED HAWK. NTOS would like to thank Melissa Donahue , Ed Gleaves of the Warner Park Nature Center for leading this walk. It was a special treat to visit an area normally not open to the public.
