At 8:00 today Sep. 25 I saw a MOURNING WARBLER at the Eagle Lake Refuge, near Shelby Forest State Park in west Shelby County. I saw it in thickets between the bluff and the gravel road, half way from the parking lot with the observation tower to the first "Dip" sign down that road. There were numerous Gray Catbirds, several White-eyed Vireos, and many Indigo Buntings around, plus dueting Red-shouldered Hawks and trilling Carolina Wrens there. I heard one Acadian Flycatcher, saw several American Crows and a handful of cardinals. At Poplar Tree Lake in Shelby Forest, 11:00 a.m., I saw a small feeding flock with a Kentucky Warbler, Carolina Chickadees, a Yellow-throated Vireo, and a Northern Parula. White-eyed Vireos, cardinals, and Tufted Titmouse were in the same area, plus Red-headeds and a Downy Woodpecker. I heard an Acadian Flycatcher here, too, and more crows. On the way out from there, down the one-way road behind the ranger's house, I saw an Acadian Flycatcher, and just then another small feeding flock moved through, with a stunning male GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, two or three Tennessee Warblers, and a male American Redstart. A Downy Woodpecker seemed to imitate the redstart, hanging, with tail spread out and wings fluttering, on a clump of dried leaves, gleaning from it. More Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmouse, White-eyed Vireos here, plus one Pileated and two Red-bellied Woodpeckers heard. Fun Birding!
