I was cold and ready to leave the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park viewing area in Meigs Co. at about 6:10 p.m. (near dark) on Saturday, Sandhill Crane Viewing Day. However, 3 hardier Knoxvillians were hanging on, because they were hoping to see their first whooping crane. Their perseverance was rewarded! One of them spotted a white bird among hundreds of sandhill cranes on Hiwassee Island. It was an endangered whooping crane, possibly 28-05, a female hatched in 2005. In addition, I saw 11 immature bald eagles, a new record for me in one day. Add the 4 adult bald eagles I saw yesterday at CRMP, and we know that there are at least 15 bald eagles in the area of the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge! Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission Member Julie Schuster and her husband, Darrell, along with TOS member Melinda Welton, saw a whooping crane earlier this morning at the CRMP. TWRC member William Brown was also in attendance on day 1 at the Sandhill Crane Viewing Day. The 20th year of the SCVD continues Sunday at the HWR and the CRMP.
