Today, Marilyn Burgess and I passed through Waverly, in Humphreys County, en route to the TN River NWR Duck River Unit, and atop a telegraph pole next to the RR tracks paralleling Hwy. 70, spotted a perched female Merlin. After a few minutes, it flew to the ground to catch a mouse, came back up, but was scared off by a train. This stretch of track, after some years of driving by it, is a productive raptor haunt: we also saw a Red-shouldered and Red-tailed hawk and a Kestral along it today, along with the usual Starlings and Pigeons, and House Sparrows at Wal-Mart.
