This morning a merlin falcon perched three feet from our screened porch to keep an eye on the bird feeder. I got a very good look at this bird and compared it with pictures in Scholz's "Birds of Prey" (Stackpole, 1993). It is similar to the sharp-shinned hawk but not so sleek and has more markings and mottlings on its back, especially at the head. Merlins are described as occasional visitors here following migratory routes such as along Kentucky Lake, near where it was spotted.
