All, Please forward this to whomever you think may be interested. I will be running two different bird banding stations this May through August, one in Blount County (Great Smoky Mountains National Park) and one in Knox County (Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge). I would like to have some teens assist me. What I can offer: up close looks at beautiful, secretive birds; a chance to learn and practice the scientific method; sunrises at a beautiful location; opportunity to see creatures that many other people never do. We can arrange for hourse to be credited for community service or internship requirements, if we discuss it before he season starts. What I need: at least 2 teens for each station, who have transportation to and from one of the banding stations early in the morning. They need to be physically capable of walking the net lanes several times a day (a few miles total per day) each of the 8 banding days through the summer. The Blount County station involves a river crossing and very rough footing. The Knox station requires being out in direct sunlight. Both may entail biting insects. These individuals need to be reliable, and willing to learn how to conduct science. This can also be an opportunity for college students to learn to band birds. Students (or adults) who are interested in coming, but can't commit for the summer, can also contact me.
