I got several inquiries about the obvious entry error on shrikes. Not
Northern, given the comments (and lack of intense details if they had been).
Thanks to those who let me know of the error.
I've been to the northern part of the Sequatchie Valley twice in the last
two weeks (as far south as Nine Mile, nine miles north of Pikeville).
There's the usual pair of Scissor-tailed Flycatchers nesting on the usual
transformer on Nine Mile Crossroad southeast of the intersection with Old
Highway 28. Didn't find any others. There have been 3-4 singing Dickcissels
at the intersection of Melvine Crossroad and East Valley Road, but these
were the only ones I've found. The pair of Loggerhead Shrikes have been
along the fence way in the back of Brushy Cemetery, almost unidentifiable
without a scope except when they fly. The other Sequatchie Valley specialty,
Eurasian Collared Dove, was heard in a couple of places each time, and seen
once.
On Sunday, June 7, at Brady and Hinch Mts. in nearby Cumberland County, we
found the usual Cerulean Warblers and American Redstarts, with a couple of
Chestnut-sided Warblers at the top of Hinch Mt. The road seems to be in
worse condition this year (big rocks and some ditches), though fortunately
it turned out to be passible for a Subaru and a minivan. The road to the
east of Hinch Mt. from Hwy 68 and Happy Top Rd (Jewett Rd) was bad, but
considerably better than the road going south along Brady Mt. (Hinch Rd. or
Jewett Rd.). The road up Hinch Mt. wasn't as bad as the roads leading in.
Not much of a view from the top as the trees around the outside of the FAA's
fence are getting taller each year.
