The late season migrants are putting in a passable showing here in
western Lewis County in the last few days. A Mourning Warbler was
singing and briefly seen this morning (5/15/07), as early as I have
ever had this species in the 5 springs I've been here. I also had
the year's first Northern Waterthrush this morning. One or two
Canada Warblers have been around every day. A singing male Bay-
breasted Warbler yesterday was the season's first (they're a little
more common here than in east TN). Blackpoll and Magnolia Warblers
are thinning out, with only one of each yesterday and neither so far
today. The Cuckoo numbers are very low, but I do have a Yellow-
billed or two around. No Black-billed Cuckoos this spring, which is
a species I usually get at least once a season. For some reason, the
Catharus thrushes are never as numerous here as I would expect them
to be, but there's been a Swainson's and/or Veery most daysAbout the
flycatchers -- I've noticed that Acadian Flycatchers and
Eastern Wood Pewees are present but less numerous than usual this
year. I've not yet seen or heard any other Empidonax species this
season.
