I drove by Ogg Rd. (just off Hwy 41 between Springfield and Cedar Hill) this morning and hit the jackpot again with Lapland Longspurs. Last week I was seeing relatively few birds (10-20) and I figured most of them had left. But the field has been peppered with birds the last couple of times I've checked. Today, after a bit of waiting, many of them came very close to the road. They were grouped loosely in several bunches spaced down through the field and I counted nearly 100 in one, and about 50 in another. The other couple of bunches flew before I could get any kind of count, but there were easily 200 present in total. The Black-necked Stilt that I've been watching since late November seems finally to have left. Spencer Coffey and I saw it on Jan.1, the last time I know that it was seen.
