I have not finished tallying the full results yet for the Knoxville CBC held on Saturday, 3 January 2015 but (unless I've miscounted) the final species tally is 103 species... second only to last year's record-setting 105 species. Many of the highlights have already been reported but I'll summarize below. Thanks to everyone that participated! Biggest misses included ... - Palm Warbler (first miss since 2000) - American Wigeon - Rufous Hummingbird (none known to be wintering in circle this year) - Red-headed Woodpecker - Loggerhead Shrike (2nd time missed in consecutive years since 1957) - Red-breasted Nuthatch Highlights: 17 waterfowl species including... - Greater White-fronted Goose, the well-reported bird in Hardin Valley (Knox Co) - Snow Gooee (Hardin Valley) - 3 N Pintail (Blount Co) - 2 C Goldeneye (Melton Hill Lake, Anderson Co) Great Egret, 1 at usual spot at Lackey Creek in Blount Co Bald Eagle, reported by almost every party near water Merlin, 4! (Yes, I said 4) almost equals the previous cummulative total over count history of 5. Reports were scattered across the circle (but all in Knox Co) including ... - the well-reported bird at Lakeshore Park, - 1 at Cove Island on Lyon's Bend - 1 at Admiral Farragut Park - 1 at Dead Horse Lake Sandhill Cranes reported by two parties 1 Herring Gull at Admiral Farragut Park (Ft Loudoun Lake) Fish Crows reported by 3 parties (will break the previous high count) Tree Swallow, 2nd record (I think I said 3rd before) Melton Hill Lake Brown-headed Nuthatch, increasingly common and reported by several parties, will this be the year they out-number White-breasted? 4 warbler species... we've had 4 warblers multiple times but inexplicably missing Palm this year kept us from finally reaching 5 - Orange-crowned Warbler, Blount Co - Black-and-white Warbler, 2nd record, Haw Ridge Park (Anderson Co) 5 Icterids including... - Rusty Blackbird, at least 2 parties - C Grackle, we did end up with more than one but barely double-digits - Brown-headed Cowbird, another hard-to-find species here in winter Single digit numbers of both Pine Siskin and Purple Finch Thanks again to everyone that participated. I hope to have full results on the CBC website soon.
