[TN-Bird] Knox Co., late Hummer

It was 40° this morning, where we live, hard by the banks of Bull Run Creek
in North Knox County, but we have a female hummer that is still hanging with
us. Strangely, for the last few days, she only shows herself shortly after
daybreak and although we check the feeders off and on during the day, she is
not to be seen.
The latest date for a hummer at our place is 10/6 and with the slight upward
bump in temps expected over the remainder of the week, I'll be interested in
seeing if she ties or breaks that record.

It has been a banner year here for these delightful wee creatures and in
July, during the population peak, I was feeding about 3 pints of fluid a
day.

I went with a stronger mixture this year (as a lady who contributes to the
site has been advocating). As I recall, she feeds a 2:1 mixture rather than
the traditional 4:1. I split the difference and went with 3:1. The birds
seem to like and thrive on it, so I think I'll stay with 3:1 in the future.
It stands to reason that the birds will derive more energy from the richer
mixture.

I developed an ant guard for my feeders this year that works well and is
easily built with locally available parts. Should anyone be interested, I
would be glad to provide them with pix and a parts list.
