TN-birders,
Dollyann and I drove down to Stone Cave Rd., about a mile SE of Dunlap in
Sequatchie County, this morning to try to see the Swallow-tailed Kites
(STKI) and a Mississippi Kite (MIKI) reported from there yesterday. While
we were at Stone Cave Rd. we ran into many other birders and saw up to 5
STKI's but no MIKI.
As we left, we drove east to the junction with Highway 283 (not too far)
and turned left to go north on 283. We only drove far enough to clear some
trees and a couple of the other birders had pulled over to the right and
were looking into the skies over a large field. We stopped also and that's
where all the kites had gathered to catch dragonflies over the field. We
eventually counted 12 st kites but did also find the Mississippi Kite in
with them.
Yesterday Ruben Stoll had 14 Swallow-tailed Kites and that was a new state
high count.
