Shelby County, May 24 & 25
On the way to Meeman Shelby State Park over the weekend Sarah Scott and I
saw a large kettle of Mississippi Kites. There were 60+ birds and were feeding
as Mark described over the tree tops and over what appeared to be
(un-harvested) wheat fields. This was in Millington, between the Memphis Police
Academy
grounds and Hwy. 51, near the state park turn-off. They were there at 5pm
5/24 and 4pm 5/25 but not there at 7:30 am on 5/25... afternoon feeders. No
kites were seen over the bare (wheat?) fields near the River. I guess the bare
fields don't support the insects that the kites feed on.
