The Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society will sponsor
the following field trips in April, 2003:

Tuesdays, April 8, 15 and 22, 2003.
Bird identification trip to Pellissippi State Technical Community College on
Hardin Valley Road.
Leader: David Trently (531-1473 h; 974-8664 w)
Meet at 6:00 p.m. each evening at the smaller parking lot near the pond.
We will spend at least the first half hour each night studying field marks
of birds. We can expect all six Tennessee swallow species, hopefully some
shorebirds, and maybe a few warblers and sparrows in the hedgerows and
fields. We may leave from there and go to other locations looking for more
birds. You may want to bring a chair as we may sit for a while as we study
the bird.

Saturday, April 12 - Field trip to CHEROHALA SKYWAY
Leader: David Trently, 974-8664 (w), 531-1473 (h), dtrently@xxxxxxx
Depart from the Stokely Bldg parking lot on N Cedar Bluff Road in west
Knoxville at 7:00 a.m. We will stop at 8:00 a.m. at the Hardees in Tellico
Plains to pick up other birders.
We will expect to return to Knoxville in mid to late afternoon.
The Skyway reaches elevations around 5000 feet, and so has a good variety or
birds. Targets will include spring migrants plus Common Raven; Black-capped
Chickadee; Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Blue, Canada Warblers...and many
more. Lots of wildflowers should be blooming too.
Bring lunch - there is no place to buy anything on the Skyway.
We will not do very much walking on this trip. It will be mostly driving to
pull-offs and wandering around listening and looking for birds along the
road.

Sunday, April 13 - Field trip to BIG CREEK TRAIL in the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park, North Carolina.
Leader: David Trently, 974-8664 (w), 531-1473 (h), dtrently@xxxxxxx
Leave at 7:00 a.m. from the Comcast parking lot (formerly the K-Mart parking
lot) on US Highway 11E. Take the first exit (Exit 394) from I-40 east of
the
junction of I-40 and I-640; turn left on US 11E and the lot is on the right
at
the top of the hill just before the construction for the Holston River
Bridge.
It's about an hour drive on I-40.
We will bird 2.1 miles to Mouse Creek Falls where we will eat lunch.
On the return trip, we will likely spend about an hour in the Rankin Bottoms
area. Bring lunch, including something to drink - to be carried on the
trail. Hiking boots suggested. Elevation change is about 500 feet over the 2
miles of trail, so it's not a very steep hike.

We should hear and see warblers along the trail: Black-throated Green,
Ovenbird, Northern Parula, Worm-eating, Louisiana Waterthrush,
Black-and-white, Hooded and maybe some migrants.
At Rankin there should be some shorebirds, waders and waterfowl.

Saturday, April 19, 2003
Oak Ridge Reservation's North Boundary Trail Greenway.
Leader: Dev Joslin (865-482-7591, jdjoslin@xxxxxxxxx)
We will meet at 7:00 a.m. in the back of the Walmart parking lot (near
Panera's) in downtown Oak Ridge (on Illinois Ave, the main road into Oak
Ridge coming in on the Pellissippi parkway).
This several mile loop passes over and along Bear Creek and East
Fork Poplar Creek and crosses mature forest, riparian, shrub-scrub,
wetland and second-growth forest habitats. Twenty-two of 32 Ridge and
Valley "species of conservation concern" are known to breed here, as
well as 7 species on Partner's in Flight's National Watch List. By this
date, Kentucky, Prairie, and Yellow-throated Warblers should have
returned along with Acadian Flycatchers, Summer Tanagers, Yellow-billed
Cuckoos, Wood Thrushes and Yellow-breasted Chats. Other very likely
species are Blue-winged Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler, Yellow-throated
Vireo, Red-headed Woodpecker, Wild Turkey, and Bob-white Quail.
Possible are Louisiana Waterthrush, Cerulean Warbler, and many migrants
species passing through.

Saturday, April 26,2003.
PUBLIC FIELD TRIP to Ijams Nature Center.
Leader: David Trently (531-1473).
Meet at Ijams Nature Center parking lot near the visitor center at 8:00 a.m.
The walk will be along trails in the nature center. Spring migrants are the
objects of this field trip. Orioles, grosbeaks, warblers, and other spring
migrants are expected. The general public will be invited.

Members and non-members are invited to attend these trips. We regret that
we will be unable to conduct trips on Sharps Ridge this year. That area is
closed due to the Orange Alert.
