The 30th Jackson Christmas Bird Count (22nd consecutive) was held on Monday,
January 3rd, 2011. Three observers tallied 77 species. All-time record is 90
species, set in 2001.
The weather started out a bit on the chilly side at 17 degrees but warmed up to
48 degrees in the afternoon. Skies were clear all day with a slight breeze in
the afternoon.

Highlights included:

Bald Eagle - 1, new species for count day. It was tallied previously in 2007 as
a count week bird.
Sandhill Crane - 3, 3rd count record
Fish Crow - 4, 12th count record
Red-breasted Nuthatch - 1, 10th count record
Sedge Wren - 1, new species for the count
Pine Warbler - 1, 14th count record
Brewer's Blackbird - 350, 9th count record

Notable misses included: Canada Goose, Northern Shoveler, American Coot,
Red-headed Woodpecker, Loggerhead Shrike, American Pipit, and Chipping Sparrow.
We also had no Purple Finches or Pine Siskins on the count this year. A few of
comments on some of these species:

Red-headed Woodpecker - Out of the 30 Jackson CBCs it was present as a count
day
bird on 22 counts and on 2 more as a count week bird.

Loggerhead Shrike - sadly, we have now missed this bird on the count 4 years in
a row. Out of the 30 Jackson CBCs it was present as a count day bird on
22 counts and on 2 more as a count week bird.

Chipping Sparrow - we seem to be right on the northern range limit for this
bird. Out of the 30 Jackson CBCs it was present as a count day bird on 15 of
them and some years in really good numbers. Other years, like this year, it was
totally absent.

Species found in lower numbers than usual included:

American Kestrel - 6, lowest number in the 22 consecutive Jackson CBCs started
in 1990. All-time low was 2 birds in 1963. This species has never been missed
on
count day.
Horned Lark - 3, lowest number since 1994
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 17, lowest number since 2004

Species found in higher numbers than usual included:

Wood Duck - 30, new high count, previous high was 21 in 1998
Gadwall - 90, new high count, previous high was 85 in 2002.
Wilson's Snipe - 25, 2nd highest count, high count is 37 in 1999 when it was
know as Common Snipe.

Pileated Woodpecker - 10, ties high count set in 2006

1952
