The Jackson, Madison County, TN Christmas Bird count was held on Saturday, December 27. It was mostly sunny with a high of 60 degrees. Five observers tallied a total of 80 species which was a bit below average. Notable species were: American Bittern (a first for this count) - one bird was seen at West Madison Refuge on Hwy. 412 at dusk Palm Warbler (2nd count record for this species) - 2 were seen in the pine trees at the UT Agricultural Experiment Station Eurasian Collared-Dove - 5 individuals seen at 3 different locations Other highlights were Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Wilson's Snipe, American Pipit, Cedar Waxwing, Loggerhead Shrike, Pine Warbler, and Purple Finch. We had 11 species of waterfowl and good numbers of all dabbling ducks. Over 10,000 ducks were seen leaving the refuge flying to the west at dusk. Misses included N. Bobwhite, Ring-billed Gull, E. Screech-Owl, Fish Crow (the first time we've missed it in 5 years), Chipping Sparrow, Rusty Blackbird, Brewer's Blackbird, and Pine Siskin. We again had no large flocks of blackbirds on the ground. The only large flocks were distant birds in flight. Observers were Bob Ford, Clay Gascoigne, Mark Greene, Rick Light, and Mike Todd. Thanks to all of these participants for their help again this year. Good birding, Mark Greene Trenton, TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation. ----------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, simply send email to: tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ----------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send email to: tn-bird-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TN-Bird Net is owned by the Tennessee Ornithological Society Neither the society(TOS) nor its moderator(s) endorse the views or opinions expressed by the members of this discussion group.
