Dear all
I'm still getting a lot of emails about the proposed Sandhill Crane hunt
from the general public as well as from birders. The public comment period
for the hunt has not yet been announced. I've been invited to a meeting at
TWRA on Tuesday and will share what I learn.

In preparing for that meeting, I re-read the report of the "2006 National
Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation for
Tennessee" and the trend in favor of more and more people watching wildlife
is impressive!

Of the 2.8 million residents and non-residents that participated in wildlife
related activities in Tennessee in 2006:
31% Fishing
12% Hunting
84% Wildlife Watching!
(they add up to more that 100% because some folks did more than one
activity)

Wildlife Watchers are behind in per-capita spending, but the totals are
still impressive:
$600 million spent by Fishers
$488 million spent by Hunters
$992 million spent by Wildlife Watchers in Tennessee!

The trends are even more surprising.
For state residents in the last 10 years:
Hunting is down 25%
Wildlife Watching is up 81%
Hunters spent 50% less (not statistically significant)
Wildlife Watchers spent 65% more (not statistically significant)

For state residents in the last 5 years - 2001 to 2006:
Hunting is down 10% (not statistically significant)
Wildlife Watching is up 93%!!!!!
Hunters spent 35% less (not statistically significant)
Wildlife Watchers spent 112% more!!!

The 21st Century is bring TWRA a very different looking constituency. We
need to find a funding source that matches this new reality - the Bluebird
license plate is clearly insufficient.
