I also want to add that your comments at the meeting were very effective! Thank you for your presence and your research! Vickie Henderson Knoxville, TN In a message dated 1/22/2011 10:32:57 A.M. The overall number of sandhill cranes in the area seems to be decreasing, based upon my observations. Still later, from the Blythe Ferry Landing in Rhea County, I noted a significant change of crane behavior at dusk. At least several hundred abandoned the mud bars on Hiwassee Island and in the Hiwassee River and chose to spend the night on a large mud bar that is under the Highway 60 bridge between Meigs and Rhea counties. Most were on the south end of that mud bar. Therefore, I'm going to need to search that area for whooping cranes, as well as the previously mentioned areas. No whooping cranes were seen on this occasion. Let me add my great appreciation for Melinda Welton and the many others who expended so much time and energy on behalf of the eastern sandhill crane population. Thanks also to the TWR Commissioners who listened to all sides and made what they considered the best decision for the near future.
