Saturday we had a wet start to the day but the show went on, continuing an unbroken tradition for the Hickory - Priest New Year's Day Christmas Bird Count. Seventeen people counted in five parties. Showers in the morning gave way to a calm afternoon, and the count ended with a respectable 93 species tallied, assuming all are accepted. Highlights: On the Old Hickory section Chris Sloan and company had Common Merganser and Cackling Goose. Scott Somershoe stayed late for roosting birds at Percy Priest Lake and found three more Com. Mergansers, 10,000+ Ring-billed Gulls, 140+ Com. Loons and nice assortment of ducks. And he turned up "only" 6 Screech Owls. One Merlin was recorded in the usual location at Priest Lake. Jerry Drury had one Short-eared Owl at Shelby Bottoms. Misses include a continued lack of White-breasted Nuthatch for this area, no Turkey Vulture and no Purple Finch.
