Barry,

Your bird sounds a lot like a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker to me.

Did you happen to notice a white blaze on the wing, roughly parallel
to the body? That is a pretty reliable mark that can be seen from
quite a distance on a bird that's "perched" on the side of a tree, or
on a feeder. The adult female has read from about the hight point on
the top of the head down to the cere. The male has this, plus a red
chin. If you see it again, also look for rather contrasting black
and white markings on the face.

They do tend to have what can be called a "dingy" look to them - if
there is a way to say that and not sound negative, since I think of
them as quite attractive birds.

In Tennessee sapsuckers are usually a winter bird, though there is
some breeding up in the mountains, which is currently the focus of
some study by NPS, Forest Service and other organizations. ANY
summer sighting of this species in Tennessee is interesting, and I am
one of the folks who collects this data to send to the researchers.
