March 13, 2011 Shelby Co. TN DeSoto-Tunica Co. MS My first of season Cliff Swallows have returned to 2 locations, now looking for Banks. At TVA Lake, the numbers are dwindling and Lucy the leucistic Lesser Scaup has gone back to Robco Lake. In the fields west of the "Pits", 8 Golden-Plovers paced the stubble. The RED-NECKED GREBE is still residing at Robco Lake, but its company of ducks, cormorants, grebes and gulls has now been reduced to countable levels. In DeSoto Co, MS, 2 groups of American Golden-Plovers were located with 67 and 102 counted on 2 passes. Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs studdied the scattered puddles along with growing numbers of Wilson's Snipe. At the Tunica Co. dump, only 1-2,000 Ring-bills ( no dumping on Sundays) with apparently the same 1st year Lesser Black-backed plus 1-3rd year, 1-2nd year and 6 motley 1st year Herring Gulls. Over 100 Wilson's Snipe in a wet area between Kirby and Buck Island Roads were keeping company with 3 Pectoral and 3 Least Sandpipers plus another flock of 50 plus Golden-Plovers were a fly-by. Around the Hot Thornton and Little Texas ponds were numerous Blue-winged Teal along with 4 species of geese and 11 species of ducks. Two fields in the area produced the mother load with Killdeer, 321 Golden-Plovers, 2 Black-necked Stilts, 43 Greater Yellowlegs, 119 Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 75+ Least Sandpipers, 95 Pectoral Sandpipers, 9 Long-billed Dowitchers and 188 Wilson's Snipe. On Arkabutla Lake, a flotilla of 1,500/2,000 White Pelicans had the company of 6 Ring-billed Gulls, 2 young Herring, 2 Bonaparte's and 2 Forster's Terns plus a few waterfowl. Jeff R.
