In a Cumberland County version of the Patagonia Rest Area Effect, Joseph Mast called me this afternoon (Monday, Jan. 17, 2011) to say that while at Lake Tansi looking for the White-winged Scoter (which he later saw scooting on the ice), he'd found an immature Greater White-fronted Goose. I went out before dusk and found it in a pasture with Canada Geese along Ted Davis Rd. at the UT Grasslands Unit (1/2 mile south of Lake Tansi). It lacked the white front and the dark patches on the belly, but had an orange bill and legs. It was much smaller than the Canada Geese, and overall was brownish, rather than the slate gray of blue phase Snow Goose. According to Stephen Stedman's website, this is a new species for Cumberland County. Ed LeGrand Crossville, Cumberland Co.
