A great crowd is turning out for the all-day Friday field trips for early birding at the TOS / VSO Joint Meeting which will be held May 18-20 at Johnson City, TN, just a few short miles south of the Tennessee/Virginia border. The Holiday Inn Hotel and Convention Center management reported today (April 12) that many rooms have been reserved for Thursday night, May 17, and almost all are taking room stays of three nights. The early turnout for Thursday night accommodations is evidence, to the Bristol Bird Club (the host club), that almost all of these early birders plan to be at the starting line in the Holiday Inn parking lots when the Friday field trips get under way at 7 a.m., heading into the highlands of the beautiful Southern Blue Ridge of Northeast Tennessee. Here birding areas will extended from high elevation cranberry bogs to well over 6,000 feet elevation along the Tennessee-North Carolina border in challenging and exciting northern conifers and northern hardwoods. Birding should be simply exciting in one of the most accessible high elevation birding areas of these southern mountains. Wallace Coffey Bristol, TN
