Blount County, TN December 11, 2005 Hi folks, Yesterday Tracey and I did a short hike in the Smokies. It was not a birding hike, and we didn't even have optics. Yet we still lucked into some good observatins. Ruffed Grouse: 1 at the north end of Foothills Parkway West in Walland; one at the trailhead to Rabbit Creek Trail Red Crossbills: a small flock flying over Rabbit Creek Trail, perhaps a mile from the Cades Cove end. American Woodcock: one in a TINY little seep on Rabbit Creek Trail. At our home in south Blount Count, we have consistently have a handful of Purple Finches and one lone White-crowned Sparrow, sharing the feeders with a dozen or so House Finches, hordes of Northern Cardinals, a couple dozen White-throated Sparrows and 20+ Mourning Doves. Good day! charlie ******************************************************************* Charlie Muise, Naturalist near Great Smoky Mountains National Park "To the dull mind all nature is leaden.
