I got to the Spring Hill area around 7 am Central Standard Time and was unable to locate the bird in any of the spots it had previously been reported (see posts on the TN list, easily accessible without subscribing at //www.freelists.org/archive/tn-bird/01-2009). After a while ended up I ran into fellow GA birders Josh, Teresa and Seth Spence, and then 3 TN birders, at the Saturn gate on the NW side of 31 opposite the Rippavilla mansion (this is the first gate on the right as you head S on 31 from Saturn parkway, is a good safe place to get parked well off the very busy road, and gives as a good a view as anywhere over the large stubble field that the owl seems to have been seen in most recently, parts of which are, however, still out of sight). Around 8:20 Josh spotted the SNOWY OWL flying from over the ridge to the W. It settled relatively close and allowed for great prolonged scope views. From posts of TN list looks like it was there for a good while. On the way back had a few other good birds. At the S/E-bound rest area off I24 on an island in Nickajack Lake (a little W of Chattanooga) there were 3 GREATER SCAUP close in (2 ad m and a prob imm male), with Lessers close by for comparison. Quite a few Bonaparte's Gulls too. At Booker T Washington State Park on L Chickamauga had the PACIFIC LOON. I picked it up from the scope way off to the SW from the boat ramp and walked some way along the beach to the SW for a better less heat-hazy (albeit still very distant) view. Also present: lots of Common Loons and Horned Grebes, a few pine Siskins, ca. 30 Common Goldeneyes (also had 3 of these from the Chickamauga Dam). I'd appreciate it if someone subscribed to the TN list forwarded this post there.
