It appears that the TN-Bird server we have with FreeLists
has been offline from about noon Wednesday until sometime
before 6 a.m. today (Friday). I have no official word but
here is what I have been able to figure out on my own:
-- it was not limited to TN-Bird. All state lists who use
FreeLists were down. It looks like the massive lists
provided by FreeLists were all down.

-- TN-Bird archives and the archives of all other state
lists I could check were also down.

-- the television station in the community where the
FreeLists servers are located reported very harsh weather
conditions and widespread power outages. It is my belief
they were down due to the storm. This could be any type
of problem.

-- all state lists I have been able to check indicate they
all came back online earlier today (I would imagine at the same time).

What I was able to do:

I posted a message that all FreeLists lists were offline on all
surrounding state bird lists. It was hopeful that some of you
who subscribe to those lists may have seen the message
and figured how that is why TN-Bird was offline. BIRDKY was
offline so I could not post to that for those of you who are a
Kentucky list subscriber.

Here is what we know:

-- several years ago FreeLists had a very destructive fire
at their server site and they were offline for several days before
they got everything rebuilt, up and running. A few days later
they

-- FreeLists is available to us because of the nature of what
we do, the service we provide and the quality of our list and
its good management which is good because of the way you
participate and the style you honor and assure.

-- FreeLists is funded from grants and donations. They do
not burden our messages with advertising. They are able to
sell ads in and around the archives.

-- FreeLists has a very small staff despite the fact they provide
a very big service. I think, if I remember correctly, they have
several thousands such lists to subscribers in many countries.

-- they simply cannot take phone calls from people who have
complaints and problems due to the millions of emails and
subscribers they serve. They do respond to moderators and
such like myself as they can get to us.

-- I have not heard anything from them about the outage and
may not hear anything. When they were down due to the fire
a few years ago, they did send a message several days later
and informed us.
