Frank et al., There is a complete listing (based on information available at the time) of observed cowbird hosts in Tennessee in the Tennessee Breeding Bird Atlas, as well as discussions of the frequency of parasitism in the individual species accounts of host species. Cardinals, Song Sparrows, and Chipping Sparrows are all fairly common to common hosts. Host species I've observed this year include Cardinal, Song Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (a large cowbird nestling in a gnatcatcher nest is quite a sight!), Red-eyed Vireo, Ovenbird, Hooded Warbler, and Scarlet Tanager. Davidson Co. 28 June 2004 Monday evening at my home in Bellevue on the outskirts of Nashville I was waiting for a hummingbird to make an appearance. In a nearby bush I heard and then saw a large begging youngster. I watched for a couple minutes and soon saw a CHIPPING SPARROW feed the BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD youngster. I checked "The Birder's Handbook" and, sure enough, found that CHIPPING SPARROWs are often cowbird hosts. What other species have TNbirders seen this spring as cowbird surrogate parents? -- Frank Fekel Tennessee State University Center of Excellence in Information Systems 330 10th Avenue North Nashville, TN 37203 USA =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation. ----------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, simply send email to: tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ----------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send email to: tn-bird-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TN-Bird Net is owned by the Tennessee Ornithological Society Neither the society(TOS) nor its moderator(s) endorse the views or opinions expressed by the members of this discussion group.
