[TN-Bird] FW: Re: Disturbing Whooping Cranes with gunfire

Um... maybe it's just me but... why would anyone want to hunt for Sandhill
Cranes??? Are they supposed to taste good? Seems to me if there's a chance
someone could bring down a Whooper while shooting at Sandhills, there shouldn't
be a Sandhill hunting season.
(As if Missouri will be asking my opinion.)

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation website
( http://mdc.mo.gov/seasons/"""; target="_new"> http://mdc.mo.gov/seasons/""; >
target="_new"> http://mdc.mo.gov/seasons/"; target="_new">
http://mdc.mo.gov/seasons/"; > > target="_new"> http://mdc.mo.gov/seasons/
target="_new"> http://mdc.mo.gov/seasons/ > target="_new">

there is no legal swan or sandhill crane
hunting season in the state. The season for white geese was open on Dec. 29.
And Missouri is part of the Mississippi Flyway Council, which as we've
discussed here before, is drafting a sandhill crane management plan which
could result in flyway states, including Tennessee, establishing a sandhill
crane hunting season.

The advice to be respectful of the Whooping Cranes means do not disturb the
birds period. Do any of you have any advice for what hunters shooting at
Sandhill Cranes when Whoopers might be in the area could do to assure that
gunfire and stalking in nearby fields does not disturb Whoopers ? Such
recommendations needs to be quickly passed along to the US Fish & Wildlife
Service, TWRA and political administrations to help manage the future
Sandhill Crane hunting season that is most likely going to happen in
Tennessee.
Does anyone know if the 5 of 8 Trumpeter Swans shot at Eagle Bluffs near
Colombia MO on Dec. 29 were present during a hunting season for any similar
swans, cranes, etc ? The post on TN-Birds said persons were apprehended.

Let's go birding......
