4-4-08 Radnor Lake Davidson Co. After returning home this afternoon from out of town, I had a message from Sharon Monroe saying she saw 4 Common Loons at Radnor Lake yesterday, April 3. And she got to hear one of them call briefly. They were first found yesterday by 2 Lipscomb University students who are doing a waterfowl survey at Radnor. Loons are quite uncommon at Radnor, having seen only 2 myself in 25+ years of birding there. And I don't think there's ever been 4 at one time there. I went over this afternoon, and although 3 had left, there was still one there in beautiful breeding plumage. It was in the middle of the lake and then made its way over toward the dam. It was still there as of 5:00 PM. I also had my FOS Eastern Kingbird, seen from the road, flycatching along the edge of the lake from a fallen tree. Tree and Rough-winged swallows and Purple Martins were plentiful, and a loudly singing close Louisiana Waterthrush was nice to hear.
