Corrected on the criteria; still...
The Trumpeter Swan is considered (by state checklist committees) to
be established and countable in Michigan (where wild reproduction and
population increases have been ongoing since 1992) and Illinois, and
probably other states. The situation is very different from the
eastern Whooping Cranes, where there has been no wild reproduction
yet. To all impressions the Great Lakes populations are
"established." So there is a significant chance that a case can be
made to treat these Dyer County birds as wild and countable under ABA
rules.
