Hi all,
I visited the rookery at Drake's Creek on Old Hickory Lake near Hendersonvi=
lle, TN (just north of Nashville) yesterday morning. I spent 2 hours =
sitting in a kayak watching and taking pictures. The regular boat traffic =
there has resulted in the birds not caring about my being fairly close to =
the island. Birds didn't flush or spook, so I just moved slowly and shot =
pictures. =20

Some notes: one Black-crowned Night Heron was still sitting tight on a =
nest, possibly with eggs (infertile eggs??) or very young nestlings. One =
other Black-crowned had a half grown nestling. Otherwise there were =
fledged black-crowned's all over the place, which were fighting a lot. =
There were a couple nests with nestling Great Blues and Great Egrets, but =
not many. Tons of cormorants on the site, some with young still in nests. =
=20

I did see some really interesting behaviors. I have a picture posted (and =
35 more not posted) of an fledged hatching year Great Blue Heron that came =
to "feed" 2 young birds in a nest. I guess it came to try to steal food =
from the birds in the nest? The young birds thought they were going to get =
fed and were very excited, but they got nothing, I think. The older bird =
went through the actions of feeding young, except its bill was closed =
almost the entire time (in all 35+ picts I have of the sequence, the bill =
is only open partly in 1 and fully open in 1). The older bird stood in the =
nest for 3-4 minutes after the "feeding" episode. =20

I do have a sequence posted of pictures of a Great Egret feeding a =
nestling (which is full grown and possibly fledged) and you can see fish =
being passed to the young. I saw no food in any of the picts of the Great =
Blue sequence, so maybe it was trying to steal food?? Humm...thoughts??
